For some weeks now we’ve been hearing from many on-line retailers that Hasbro has been unable to fill their orders for some of the newer waves of figures. Many have attributed this problem to cut backs in production, however we’ve checked with Hasbro and this doesn’t appear to be the case. According to Hasbro sources, production of the Power of the Jedi line has remained consistent since the middle of last year when the line debuted. While the quantities produced have been lower than they were in 1999, they remain in line with expected demand in a non-movie year. Up until recently, the level of production was more than enough to cover orders place by both large and small accounts. That is, until now.

Within the last few weeks, some of the larger accounts have increased their orders for Power of the Jedi figures, thus limiting the stock available to smaller accounts. Toys "R" Us in particular, who until now was offering little more than clearance Episode I and Power of the Force 2 product, has now begun ordering the Power of the Jedi line. Hasbro also stated that Target has upped their order quantity to better supply increased demand for the Star Wars line in their stores. It can also be assumed that other retailers are gearing up for the summer season as well. Given time, more product should be available at traditional retailers as newer cases work their way through the supply chain.

Recognizing the shortfalls at the current levels, Hasbro has stepped up production to meet the increased demand. Unfortunately it will take an estimated six to eight weeks before the additional product reaches U.S. shores. Once the inventory has arrived, both traditional retail and on-line sources will have enough product to go around. In addition to production increased on newer figures, Hasbro has also gone back and produced additional units of harder to find items like the Gungan Warrior, Biker Scout, and Darth Maul Sith Apprentice. These figures will be worked back into circulation through a number of mixed or ‘open’ cases to be distributed this summer between new waves of figures.

Hasbro’s desire is that between increased production and the introduction of a few mixed cases, this summer will be a great time for kids and collectors to find both new figures, and those they may have missed out on previously. It also goes with out saying that a strengthening of the Star Wars brand will help re-build retailer confidence and make for a smooth transition into next years Episode II line.
