Interesting news from last week:RENTON, Wash. (AP) - Wizards of the Coast Inc., maker of trading card and role-playing games, said today it has acquired the exclusive license to create games based on the ``Star Wars'' movies. Wizards of the Coast, which produces Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering card games and publishes the Dungeons and Dragons line of games, did not disclose the value of the deal.The games and accessories will be based on the original trilogy of movies, the novels and comics published since, and the newest ``Star Wars'' films. The first ``Star Wars'' games published by Wizards of the Coast will be available in fall 2000, the company said.The original ``Star Wars'' film is the second-highest grossing film of all time in the United States, having brought in $461 million. This summer's prequel, ``Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace,'' has taken in $429 million in domestic box office receipts so far.Wizards of the Coast bought longtime game company TSR Inc., publishers of Dungeons and Dragons, in 1997. The company was acquired by Hasbro Inc (NYSE:HAS - news). in September."
Update: It should be noted that the aquisition of this license mean Wizards of the Coast will only be producing SW roleplaying games. Decipher still owns the CCG license.
