An influential member of
Star Wars history has passed away. Colin Cantwell attended UCLA, while he studied many subjects, he was particularly interested in pursuing animation. At his suggestion, an animation major was added with Cantwell being the first animation graduate. Cantwell impressed Frank Lloyd Wright with his architecture designs, and was accepted to study under him on the spot, however Wright passed away shortly after extending the offer.
Pursuing his passion for space, Cantwell began working with NASA and Jet Propulsion Laberatory where he contributed to education programs. This led him to working on several space motion pictures such as
2001: A Space Odyssey and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. From there Cantwell served as a concept artist and designer on the original 1977
Star Wars film. He created concepts for the X-wing, Death Star, and the TIE fighter amongst others.
He passed away Saturday at his home in Colorado at the age of 90.
