Questions for August 21, 2000

1
Whilst perusing your checklists I found mention of a couple of figures in the Upcoming Hasbro 3-3/4" pages, specifically the Bespin Darth Vader and Bespin Luke Skywalker that will be included in the CD-ROMs. I have had a good look around Rebelscum and numerous other sites, but I can't find any reference to them anywhere else. I can imagine what the figures will be but what are the CD-ROMs all about?
  -Jer

As of now, well, nobody knows. Last I heard, they have yet to be designed, and it was still kinda up in the air. Since these (outside of Hasbro, that is) have only been mentioned on a product price sheet, I wouldn't hold my breath. These are sheets typically sent to retaillers before information about the product-- including if it'll actually near completion-- is available. If you were to ask me to guess, I'd bank on stuff we see on the website, only more so.

Do you think the Star Wars MicroMachines line is dead? I admit that I never bought any until they hit clearance recently but now I am hoping that the line continues! Do you think it will continue for Episode 2 and 3? These used to clog the shelf.
  -Brian

Right now, it certainly looks dead. Even though there's a handful of unreleased items, I'm not optimistic, although I'd really, really want that Action Fleet Star Destroyer, be it a $20 exclusive or whatever it takes. (Give the bugger to ToyFare for all I care, just get it out.) Given the reaction toward Episode One as a whole, not just the Galoob product, I'd say it's anybody's guess. While I didn't buy too much E1 Galoob, I never missed an item based on the classic films or the expanded universe, so I hope to see more soon.

In other words, there's no solid information at this time.

Recently I picked up a Bespin Luke at one of our local TRUs, and upon first inspection, it had a nice card, bubble, etc. It wasn't until later that I realized that, although it was a standard US card, it had a trilogo sticker on the bubble, i.e. it had English, French, and Spanish. Wondering if you've ever heard of this kind of thing happening, and, if so, how rare it is.
  -Chad

So rare that nobody cares about it. Well, that's a snide answer, but more or less accurate. It's an error, and errors happen all the time, but the interest is typically pretty limited aside from the anomallies like the Boba Fett on a Freeze Frame card without the shoulder insignia.

When it comes to stickers, keep in mind that a well-trained old-world monkey could probably fake any sticker variation in less than five minutes. Maybe ten if it's a really, really dense monkey. So it's just rare enough to not matter as such.

I picked up a copy of Steven Sansweet, et al.'s Star Wars: The Action Figure Archive recently, and wondered with all the wealth of new SW product that has come to us since this book's release if there are any plans and consumer demand for a second edition (with additional material) or a totally separate volume (which is what I would prefer having already purchased the original book).
  -Rai

The original book was a translation of one of many excellent books created in Japan for-- and I use this phrase with the finger quotes it requires-- "collectible toys." If a sequel book was planned, no news of it has been shot my way, and I haven't heard of a single American book that plans to cover more of the figures.

Personally, I hope they wait until after Episode III. Of course, nobody'll care by then, but still, better to have one really great book than two or three semi-complete ones. The current edition is quite excellent, and definitely worth a gander if not a purchase.

Hey Adam, I was wondering if the Eopie w/ Qui-Gon was ever released or was it cancelled? I've never seen it anywhere.
  -Phil

Well, I've got one sitting on a shelf (opened, bwa ha ha ha) so it has been released. Getting it in UK/Trilogo packaging shouldn't be too difficult as an online retailler in the UK has/had them (mine cost me about $30, shipping included. Wish it was $20-ish.) So if you want one, go to thetoyshop.com and stick your name on the list to get one when they come in.

Now, if you want one in an American box, that might not happen. (Don't get upset, it's not a major disaster. [I'm quoting something here, but in hindsight, odds are it's too plain a choice, so I figured to make it even more awkward, that I should mention that I made a bad choice of quote.]) Asia's your best bet, as Japan got them in typical US boxes with stickers that, with some effort, can be removed. (Frankly, I'd leave it on if I were your.) Straight-out US boxes were spotted in Hong Kong and Singapore. If you've got a trading buddy, now's a good time to call in some favors.

And made it work again...

I was curious to know if any figures were ever carded on the "Revenge" cards. And if so which ones. I had a "friend" (that had a tendency to lie) say that he got a Jedi Luke on a Revenge card from the Kenner factory. I know this sounds stupid anyways, but I'm a trusting sorta guy. He said that the figure was at his folks place in Minnesota, so he never could show me it.
  -Brad

Well, if somebody refuses to show something to you, either it's for your own good or because he/she is lying to you. I don't see how not showing off a toy could be for your own good, so I'm going with the second one. Lots of proofs were made-- every figure through and including ESB as well as two templates, at least-- but no actual carded figures were shipped by Kenner.

Trusting is bad. Let your media-induced-paranoia do the talking.

I just recently picked up the Tatooine Accessory set with the yellow pullback droid. In that set is a backpack, and i was just wondering who the heck wears the backpack? It's written as if Watto wears it, but i can't recall him wearing a backpack in the movie. But I also can't remember anyone else wearing it. Do you know who's it is?
  -Pjh123

As to who wears the backpack, I flat out have no clue, and I'd bet your entire collection that it wasn't Watto. (What, you expected me to bet mine?) Many items in the packs do appear somewhere in the film, but I know at least a few are really nice Hasbro designs.

8
I heard from another site that Hasbro is going to release a new battle droid with red markings, is that true?
  -BCDLSA

I got to play with an advance sample early this summer and saw the just-released carded figure (in an associate's stash) last week. It's pretty cool.

9
The new fiftieth issue of the Official Star Wars Fan Club Magazine is on store shelves. In the Jawa Trader section they have Jek Porkins with collectors badge for $9.99. However, I called the Fan Club and they said there is a problem with delivery of this figure and they will not get it for 3-4 weeks.

I wonder if this is going to be a new fan club exclusive...?
  -Eric

Not only will it not be an exclusive, it won't be available for some time. Like maybe a month or two. So while the Fan Club typically gets the goods early (and even offers an exclusive pass), there's no benefit to the typical collector to ordering it from them in this particular case.

10
Whatever happened to Obi-Wan W/ Skeeto beast pack I heard about a while back? Has it been canceled or was it never confirmed to begin with?
  -Susan

The Skeeto, which bore a striking resemblance to a kitbashed Snake Alien from Kenner's late great ALIENS line, was shown in Hasbro's Toy Fair catalogs along with some other items that are... on hold. This is typical, however what isn't so typical is that this item will not be seeing production at all. So while it was a neat item to be proposed, and I'd be kinda miffed if I never saw it, it's just as well that it'll never be thrust upon the toy marketplace.

FIN
Did you see Godzilla 2000? It was great. Whoever wrote the dub definitely had a good time, and odds are you will too if you go see it. It's corny, and loads of fun. Pay attention for a line that refers to a goose.

Got questions? Send 'em in. Next update's due for Wednesday morning, maybe Tuesday if I get like 20 really good questions really fast. Until then, uh... hmm... ah yes. "Just look at Boba and Judy, they're as happy as can be." (Wait... no, that didn't make any sense...)

Questions for August 23, 2000

1
Was an IG-88 ever released in the POTF line. I've seen the SOTE Boba vs. IG-88, but I would like a carded one. Am I just not looking hard enough?
  -alexander

Well, we at Rebelscum (and as always, by we I mean me) consider SOTE and Expanded Universe as part of the POTF2 line since they shipped alongside (heck, in the same boxes as) POTF2. (I'm assuming you meant POTF2, IG-88 was not offered on a POTF card back in 1985.)

Right now, today, your option is the SOTE IG-88 from the two pack. An all new IG-88 is coming in the POTJ line, though, supposedly not too long from now. So you should get your wish soon, and since it's many a collector's wish, there will be much rejoicing.

Hi. I recently picked up a green carded Grand Moff Tarkin figure with no hologram on it. Wedge Collecting Empire and many magazines I have do not have this variation listed. Now, I know how easy it is to remove a holo from the card, but I got it at TRU and there was about 4 or 5 of them. If it was removed, what would be the point? I really don't care how much it is worth, but is this some new variation, or a stockboy just having fun?
  -Bailey

The nutshell:

1997 was Star Wars' 20th Anniversary, and as a special packaging bonus, figures shipped to stores for 1997 came with these holostickers. Figures slated to ship for very late 1997 or early 1998 did not ship with the stickers-- some of you might recall many Target stores getting Collection One figures on green cards sans stickers, including Slave Leia, Ceremonial Luke, and the Brown Pants Han Endor.

Since a lot of cases did not ship and merely sat in the Hasbro warehouses (which, ironically, continues to this day), some product that was meant to ship in this time frame did not. If Hasbro hadn't introduced Freeze Frames in 1998, odds are they would have continued to ship plain green carded figures.

Is it worth anything? Well, it's worth more than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, or a knee to the groin. I'm assuming $3. Many figures shipped to Kay-Bee (Toys "R" Us, too, but especially Kay-Bee) are green carded figures without holostickers. Yes, they exist, and they did not have their stickers removed-- they were just shipped without them. Some people remove them to see the image underneath, which in some cases is a lot prettier to look at than the shiny metallic sticker. On the other hand, some look great, like C-3PO and X-Wing Luke.

Have you got any inside information on dates when the POTJ line are going to it Wal-Mart and TRU in bulk? How did this line become an early Target exclusive?
  -David

Toy lingo lesson time, folks!

An exclusive is an item that, for all intents and purposes, is meant to be shipped to a select retailler or in some instances, retaillers. For example, Toys "R" Us got an exclusive Han Solo with Tauntaun in a 12" size in 1997. Another item, a 12" Sandtrooper with an orange shoulder pad, was also an exclusive, but it was "shared." This means Diamond Comics/Previews, Fred Meyer, ToyCo, Entertainment Earth, and a few other outlets got the toy, but since it was not available to everybody, it was an exclusive.

Power of the Jedi figures are not an exclusive. At all. (Some may eventually be, but right now, the new 10 are not. Well, 8, the other two still seem to be lagging behind. But since it's Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, I don't hear much complaining.) Since Target had the foresight to reset its toy area early, and the even greater vision to unload their old stock, they were ready to accept new figures with open arms, and it just worked out that they got it first. Wal-Mart, on the other hand, has a great distribution system and they often get good numbers of Hasbro product early. New Pokemon and Beast Wars/Machines items have shown up there first on numerous occasions. So, they just happened to show up there, like POTF2 happened to show up first at Service Merchandise stores in Phoenix back in 1995.

To answer your question: they will start showing up in bulk when collectors get bored with them. This should be around 15 minutes after 51% of the fans have them.

4
have you heard about any new Marmit STAR WARS figures? The Boba Fett looks incredible- and it would be awesome if they pulled out all the stops and did either a Darth Vader figure or if nothing else, "Grady" from TV's "Sanford and Son".
  -Dave

Grady before Lamont? Blasphemy!

Nope, no plans have surfaced regarding a fifth Marmit Star Wars figure. While rumors of a Darth Vader have floated around for some time, nothing has been announced after Boba Fett.

My question concerns the possibility of the Sega made Star Wars Arcade game making it to the Sega Dreamcast. I bought my Dreamcast about two months ago when the $50 rebate started and I have to say I am EXTREMELY loving the system! I bought the Dreamcast with a slight hope of Star Wars Arcade coming out for it, but as far as I remember I have yet to hear one fact or rumor covering this issue. Any tid bit you can throw my(our) way will help!
  -Adam

While many games are in development for the Dreamcast from LucasArts, the arcade game isn't one of them. Actually, I don't think any of the games are exclusive to Sega's new system anyway... Bombad Racing is due on PS2, and Power Battles was on the PSX, and... I know there was another one, can't remember what it is.

From what I remember hearing, a port of the game is feasable, it's just a matter of doing it. Supposedly it wouldn't be a straight conversion due to the arcade hardware being different than the Dreamcast by a significant enough margin, but hey, if the demand is there odds are it'll happen eventually. (Of course, I'm just as delusional about many of Sega's recent quarter munchers.)

Yeah, the DC's one of those great systems that's being ignored. Plenty of good (if not great) games, low prices, and some nifty oddball titles. (Seaman's a hoot.) (Oh, and Crazy Taxi is supposed to be reduced to $19.99 in a few months as a Greatest Hits sort of thing.) If you've got some dough to spare, Sega Bass Fishing and the fishing controller are-- and I'm serious here-- well worth a look.

A few years ago I saw an issue of a toy magazine which had a picture of the Luke and Wampa beast pack. Several months after that issue the Wampa was released but an entirely different sculpt. I personally like the first one better. What happened to this Wampa and why were we stuck with this teddy bear looking one?
  -Adam

Yeah, we had that pic in Go figure!, and I think it was in ToyFare and a few others as well. Why the change? I dunno. But it was done early on. Unless I'm misremembering things, I saw, held, and got to mess with the prototype of the Wampa that was actually released some time before those images surfaced.

My guess is that it had something to do with the item looking too fierce, but who knows? I'd love to see a release of the other Wampa sculpt some day, it's a great candidate for an exclusive.

7
Do you know what cities the Magic of Myth is going to visit after Chicago. I was wondering if it will visit the Dalas area.
  -TNeely

Can't say I do. Anybody out there got a list or something? We'll post it on the main page.

8
The back pack from the Tatouine (sp) accessory pack bears a striking resemblence to a back pack pictured in E1 Visual Dictionary. Basicly, it's a portable air conditioner. These are seen on humans wandering the streets of Mos Espa.
  -EVILCHUK

I've gotten similar responses to the other day's inquiry on this one, so here ya go! That should help.

9
Is Jacen Solo pronounced as Jaken ar Jason? My fiancee and I are expecting a baby boy in October and I want it spelled Jacen but pronounced Jaken. Please help
  -Lori

You're naming your kid after Star Wars?

Well, I know someone mentioned the answer to this before, but (and this is beginning to be an ugly pattern) I don't recall what it was. Of course, I say you can pronounce it however you want. A friend of a friend is named "Hen3ry." The "3" is silent. And no, this isn't one of my little jokes. (And no, I'm not the friend of a friend. My son would have "!" as his middle name. It's pronounced "Danger.") So by all means, pronounciation is entirely up to you. I mean, wasn't there a kid with pound signs, exclamation points, and tons of random letters named "John" a couple of years ago?

My brother and I were just sitting here looking through the official website's casting pages and noticed that the Natalie Portman character is listed as "Padme."  We both noted that Ep 1 never really stated which name was an assumed name, or if both names she used might be correct.  Padme Naberrie or Amidala?
  -Patrick

Before E1 came out, a leak said her full name was Queen Padme Nabierre Amidala. I don't think I've seen this in print yet, but that's what I plan to stick with for now.

My birthday is less than a month away. I'm feeling very old now. If you'll excuse me, I need to go get some plaid pants that go up to my armpits and some black hair dye. (Or green. I think I need green hair. I could look like sod. That'd be cool.)

Got an inquiry? Friday's the next scheduled update, so please, speak up lad!
