Questions for June 15, 2001

I never knew getting my act together 'could' be such a lengthy process... A little under the weather, and still jammed at the office, this week's Question Mark is finally here! For those that asked, the Tenth Question has returned as well...

On with the show:

1
I've seen several reports that the previously hard-to-find Swimming Jar Jar wave has been showing up in decent numbers at many TRU stores around the country. Since this wave has now surfaced in greater quantities, can we expect the Sio Bibble wave to show up soon as well?

All things being equal, I'd say yep. Toys 'R' Us took a massive amount of overstock out of the Hasbro warehouse. Much of it has made its way through the system, but there's still more. I have a few friends looking into this for me, but I imagine we'll see this wave show up sometime in the next few weeks. Keep watching the site, we'll be sure to let you know they start to arrive.

What would you think about a slimed C-3PO? I like weird stuff, so I know it seems a little far-fetched. And just encase you don't get asked this very often... What would be some figures YOU would want to see Hasbro come out with? Boba the Hutt

I'm all for it, but I'd like to see Hasbro do something new with the mold. Maybe reposition the arms... As the line continues, Hasbro is going to have to come up some interesting ways to re-work the main characters. Something like this, that hasn't been done before and can be seen in one of the movies, is fine by me. As for figures I'd like to see made (jeez, where do I start...): Captain Antilles (Rebel Fleet Captain), Biggs Anchorhead, Myo, Bom Vimdin, Feltipern T., Dodonna, New Han Hoth, Rieeken, Veers, New Dengar, Bespin Gown Leia, Ozzel, Ephant Mon, Yarna d' al' Gargan, Klaatu, Tanus Spijek, Weequay Skiff Master, New Jedi Luke, Imperial Dignitaries, Madine, Swokes Swokes (Gragra), Yarael Poof, Tey How, Diva Shaliqua, Even Piell, Teemto P., Amidala Pre Senate, Handmaidens..., should I keep going?

Do you know of any sites that have HOW they went about turning one figure into another... specifically Astromech droids? I'd like to see how they went about customizing one R2 unit and making it into another. -JohnOB1

Forgotten Force Ultimate Resource Guide (FFURG) is by far the best site for your customizing questions. You'll find everything from recipes to tips on paint and molding. If you don't find the answers you're looking for on the site, I'm sure the guys will be more than happy to help you out via email. I definitely suggest checking them out.

I was wandering if the Vintage 12inch Leia comes with any accessories other than a brush and comb? -Ken

According to the Star Wars Collectors Archive Leia pretty much came with just the clothes on her back. Aside from that, no weapon, no props, no nothing. She was actually more fashion doll than 12" action figure. You can see a complete list of parts at the SWCA site.

5
Has Hasbro ever actually said what the specific problem is with making the Tonnikas (other than that vague "rights issues")? -Jim

Yes, they have, and it's really not all that vague, unfortunately. When a toy is modeled after a particular person, toy companies usually have the actor/model sign a release granting permission to use their 'likeness.' In the case of the Tonnika sisters, that permission was never granted. To avoid possible legal issues, Hasbro has held off on those figures until that permission can be secured. Hasbro knows how bad collectors want those figures, in fact they were lined up for the first Fan Choice poll until this issue came up. I've been told, if it's at all possible, they will do them. Now it's just a matter of when.

The new Expanded Universe style figures such as Cold Weather Obi Wan, Maul Sith Apprentice and Qui Gon Jedi Armor are totally awesome! They appear to be very popular at retail as well. They sell out as soon as they're put on the shelves (at least here on Cape Cod). Does Hasbro have any more of these unique figures planned in the coming months? -naboopilot

Yes. One more Expanded Universe/"Art of Star Wars" figure is planned, a Jedi Armor version of Obi-Wan Kenobi. It should be shipping this Fall with Shmi Skywalker, and we may get our first look at it in just a couple weeks. As for what comes next..., hard to say right now. Hasbro would like to do more of these, and other EU figures, but it's a wait and see proposition. If these figures do well, and they seem to be doing fine, Hasbro will look at others. Personally, I hope they get around to the white clad Boba Fett in the 'Art of the Empire Strikes Back.' That, would be cool...

Where has the time gone when we could see pictures of new toys months ahead before they were actually released? Seems like Hasbro has tightened the strings. Most new pictures seem to appear on official sites or events (like Toy Fair). When new pictures appear on fan sites there isn't much time left before these toys are going to be released (Ellorrs and Bespin Guard). Look at Han Solo Stormtrooper Belt or Vader Emperor's Wrath! We haven't seen anything about them and yet they are scheduled for release this summer if I'm not mistaken... Well, I hope I'm not dreaming and that other fans have noticed this as well during the last year. -Sompeetalay

Ah, the good ol' days... With all that's been going on at Hasbro, the move, the reduction in staff, there just aren't as many opportunities for leaks to get out anymore. On top of that we're building up to a movie year, and in years like that, leaks are an especially bad, bad thing. Hasbro has a little more control over things now, but there's still plenty of news out there to report on. I'm sure once things get rolling next year, well start to see more, but for now they're playing things very close to the chest.

8
I would like to know why there are only 12 of the Epic Force figures, and if they're gonna make some more of them, like R2-D2 or Yoda perhaps? -George Castro

Unfortunately it looks like twelve is it. Hasbro dropped the line in 2000, and hasn't made any mention of bringing it back. Too bad too... The figures themselves were nicely done. Had they not been attached to their base, and included a little more articulation, it would have been an interesting line to watch. There was rumor once of an R2 / Yoda 2-pack, but as far as I know it never made anywhere near production. Who knows, maybe they'll dust the idea off and give another shot sometime down the line...

I was thinking of new toys that could be made and one that I think would be awesome would be a series of 3-pack Cinema Scenes of the Jedi Council. They could be linked together to form the circular chamber from the movie and the kicker would be a scene that could fit in the middle with Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Young Anakin. Are there plans for new Cinema Scenes like this or any others, the last one I saw was the Skiff Guards? -Steve

I just talked to Hasbro about these the other day... There are currently no 'plans' for additional Cinema Scenes, but Hasbro still has them under consideration for the future. My guess is they are going to wait until after Episode II, see what scenes from that film stand out as the most memorable, then try introducing the line again. They said at Toy Fair they thought the line worked best when it captured a real scene from the film. I'd imagine that means they won't be as "three-packy" as they were before, but with the work they're doing now I'd bet we'll see some great sculpts and hopefully some really unique figures. Time will tell.

Tenth Question:
"This one's for you..."

About a year or so ago, perhaps a little longer, I remember seeing ads (possibly in Previews) for Star Wars t-shirts featuring very 70's-ish, stylized, super-deformed characters. I remember Leia and R2-D2 especially. Now that I want one of these shirts, I can't find any trace of them, any where. Do you, or anyone else, know who made these and where they can be purchased? -Dave Lartigue

I kinda remember seeing something on these, but that was a long, long time ago. If you have an answer, send it on in.

Until next time...
