Incredibly fast and maneuverable -- especially considering they are essentially civilian craft jury-rigged with combat modifications -- the Alliance T-47 airspeeder is nearly unmatched in aerial combat effectiveness within the two-dimensional constraints of atmospheric flight. Heavy armor supplements an already rugged airframe; two elements especially important to Luke, who just took a solid hit from an AT-AT turbolaser and then plowed into the glacial permafrost at near top speed.
