Week Three... unwashed and getting gamey!

Questions for 21, 1999

1
Did you notice that the new Hasbro Site is Y2K complient? Some of the figures are coming out in January 1900!
  -Charles

Then I guess I should be surprised we don't have pictures of the POTF2 Tatooine Skiff yet.

is there a way to tell on # of some of the rarer pieces hasbro has put like e.g.weequay f/f,12" blue snowtrooper,r-2 pop up saber w/ small blister just wondering?
  -Jesidious

No. You see, when I said "no" last week to if Hasbro released production numbers on new items, this is sort of what I mean. Just so you know.

3
Will hasbro release the AT-ST Walker again?
  -Jax2426

Not likely. That thing sold pretty poorly when it was available... most stores had them in droves until one day, they just went *poof*.

4
Whatever happened to that Manga Starwars Line I heard they were gonna make a while back? Was there ever any chance of that being made? Or was it just a rumor?
  -Ian

I remember hearing about this. Actually, I remember writing about this. Nothing ever came of it, and if any internal artwork/prototypes exist, well, nobody's ever seen them.

5
I'm not a "hard-core" collector but i'd love to get a Dark Trooper. But the only place i've seen them is on the web. What gives? Were these EVER for sale in K-Marts and Targets and the like? Is Hasbro still producing these- along with the Spacetroopers?
  -Beej

I saw one-- ONE-- Spacetrooper in stores. It was New Year's Day, I've been up for somewhere around 26 hours, and it was sitting in a shopping cart at a Toys "R" Us. I never, ever, not once saw a Darktrooper, even though both Troopers appeared in the same assortment. While these were available in stores, there were probably less of these than the Death Star Trooper and Ree-Yees figures actually shipped to stores.

If you want them, well, the secondary market and the Fan Club are currently the only options, and the Fan Club is probably out of stock this week. Keep checking around, odds are they'll show there again.

i heard that darth maul is a really rare figure and if you get one it could be worth a good amount of money...is this true? and what other figures would be a good investment to buy?
  -RAnCiD23

He's worth a million and prizes. Darth Maul is rare. So rare, in fact, I saw three tonight.

Dude, don't buy new figures expecting a gold mine down the line. Maul is no rarer than any other Collection 1 figure, and in some assortments, is packed a little heavier than the rest. He's not rare. Just popular. If you're looking for a good investment, buy around 30 Ric Olies. Maybe the stores will get some new Collection 2 guys then.

Ok, my question is... Are the Episode 1 figures being released at different times in different parts of the country? I live in Idaho and am looking for the newest figures (Yoda, Destroyer Droid, R2-D2, etc.) and they are nowhere to be found. However, I have friends in different parts of the country who already have them. What gives?
  -Dave

Part of the fun of toy collecting is finding new stuff first-- some stores get stuff early, some don't. Some stores get stuff in, and it sells out. Odds are this is the case in your neck of the woods. Hasbro's shipping charts don't say "Idaho: Four Months after the rest of America." Also, these figures showed up a little early-- most of us weren't expecting even the first trickle until late July. So keep your eyes peeled, order a case, and always watch the skies...

What is the deal with Lott Dodd? Is this figure actually coming out this year? Is this figure even confirmed by Hasbro yet?
  -John

Unless Hasbro announced it on the new site during one of its ten minute intervals of being online and I missed it, no Lott Dodd figure has been announced.

9
Are there any lunch boxes out now or due out in the near future?
  -Ted

Well, they've been making lunch boxes for decades, I'm sure you'll find some in your area soon.

10
I have found a mint package of figure Ric Olie, but the sticker on the package states that it is Watto. Any value to it?
  -MNi1500

Anything is worth whatever you can get for it. While some people would tell you errors are worthless, the going rate for interesting errors is usually in the neighborhood of twice retail. However when it comes to something like a sticker, an error that I could fake with a little effort... well, you get the drift. It depends on the collector, and I'm sure it'd be nice tradebait.

Still going through the backlogs... if you asked "When will I see X in my area" and got a snide response, blame my goldfish.

Questions for July 23, 1999

1
Is there any plans, rumors, or otherwise on Hasbro producing a Sarlacc Pit Playset?
  -Sean

No. Off the top of my head, I would say that the most-recent toy Sarlacc is the Galoob one in the Tatooine Planet Playset from a coupla years back. It has a Jabba's Palace, a MicroMachines vehicle of the Tatooine Skiff, and a mini-Slave Leia figure in it. Other than that... well, nothing from Hasbro.

2
Which is rarer...the Chancellor Vallorum (sp?) with the sticker over the blister, or sealed under the blister??? I know the the ones I have seen have the one with the sticker under the blister with an earlier production date. I don't think that necesarily means is is more difficult to find, though.

Also, did you notice the JarJar doesn't have a, (I'll pause while you find your's) "1998 LFL" stamp, or whatever you call it, anywhere on the body?
  -Drew

On the first one, difficult to say, since some of the figures have been shipped back to/reclaimed by/sacrificed to Hasbro and it's a tough call toay what people actually bought. And I don't want to speculate on it. :)

On the second, Jar Jar does have copyright information on the back of the "skirt" piece. But yeah, nothing on the figure. :)

Where can I get a hot meal at a fair price?

Also, I recently got a couple of those amazing Marmit Stormtroopers (I just had to build one of them!). Why in the world doesn't Hasbro raise the bar on thier 12" line? It makes no sense to me- the "STAR WARS" action figures have become small works of art (i.e. the Vader with removable helmet)- so why don't they advance the 12" line to that level?
  -Dave

Hot meal fair price? Well, there's Grandma Tony's in Tucson, right by the University of Arizona. $3.74 for a good burger, real fries, and a soda after sales tax. Can't beat it.

As to Hasbro... well, readers of my newsletter have read my many tirades on the 12" line and the development group from which they come. Short, less mean answer: Hasbro's cheap, the bottom line wouldn't make it worthwhile to sell a $60-$99 doll at a $25 price point. Plus most of the stuff from that division hasn't been too well-received by collectors (all the playsets except the dioramas, the role-play stuff, etc.)... but since they did do the 14" Han Solo with Tauntaun, (and I liked their playsets), they're cool anyway. Except for carry cases, they're still learning on those...

I found a few Collection 2 figures on the shelf at a Target store that have the tri-lingual (english, spanish, french) packaging. They also have a fan club paper insert in the plastic bubble with the figures. Unfortunately they were the more common figures (e.g., Watto, Palpatine, etc). Do you think these will have more collectible value like the old Star Wars tri-logo figures?
  -Ted

When it comes to old Star Wars figures, with very few exceptions, anything still on a dead- or near-mint package is collectible. Trilogos aren't terribly collectible/popular in most circles because the bulk of figure collectors collect stuff from the United States. Now, when it comes to new stuff, I would think the trilogo stuff is more interesting to look at, but since I can (well, not literally) walk in to a store in another country and pick 'em up at retail... they're worth what you pay for 'em.

5
Are episodes 2 and 3 already written? If so what are their names. And are ep. 2 and 3 books on sell at stores. As much info possible would be greatly appreciated about ep. 2 and 3, even rumors.
  -Jason

Lucas has a story outline done, but nothing has been completed yet, nor has anything been titled. I don't expect to hear a title for Episode 2 until the teaser trailer, which probably won't be until some time in 2001.

6
I read a rumore about a new 12" biker scout with speeder due out in 2000. Have you heard anything yet? And I was wandering why people keep writing you asking how much there [stuff] is worth?
  -Obi1000

Well, I heard the same rumor, and unfortunately, it's kinda hard to get info on the 12" line's upcoming releases... if you believe good, reliable, third-party sources, then it's possible. If not... then well, I don't know yet. It's there with the Sandtrooper/Dewback set... long rumored, Hasbro's mentioned they were considering it in the past, but nothing solid. And for your second question, I don't know.

How can I start a petition? I would like to see two figures never made before - Velken Tezeri, and Weequay the Skiff Master! We have Jedi Luke without a glove, Han in carbonite, Chewy, Lando in skiff, Nikto, Barada, and Weequay. This would be a cool exclusive for the Jawa Trader, or Internet for the year 2000! Or they could put them with the skiff and sell more skiffs than they dreamed of.
  -Tim

How to start a petition? Contact a bunch of people and ask for names. When you get at least 10,000, fire it off to Hasbro. (No, I'm not kidding about the number.) When it comes to petitions, allow me to be frank: it's really not worth the trouble in most cases. Yakface's Realm managed to pull off a couple of successful ones, and got an amazing amount of response with theirs.

As to the other Weequay, I could go for that-- it'd make a nice exclusive, that's for sure, especially if they toss in another figure and make a cool two-pack. (If I could pick, I'd select the other Klaatu or one of the human guards.) But as to Skiff sales... c'mon. Hasbro could package a POTF2 pencil in that puppy and it'd sell pretty well. I agree, another Luke is getting to be a bit extreme, but we haven't had a Jedi Luke on shelves since the Complete Galaxy set in late 1998, and by the time the Skiff comes out, odds are a few people will want a Luke. (Heck, there probably won't be many guards on shelves by the time the Skiff comes out, either. :)

9
Do you know where I can find an adult costume of Qui-Gon Jinn with the robe? I'm tired of being Jedi Luke every Halloween! I've seen fans on T.V. who were wearing the Episode 1 Jedi Knight costumes and wondered how they got them.
  -(Yet another) Tim

The vast majority of really cool costumes I've seen are unofficial ones... I guess it pays to have a Mom who's handy with a sewing machine! I don't know if Rubies or another company has one in production, but I can ask around.

10
Is...the Darkside stronger????
  -Jason

I think George Lucas wants us to think the answer is "no", but c'mon. Obi-Wan cut down Maul in a fit of rage, Luke almost iced Vader the same way. I think the Dark Side is like a fire extinguisher-- odds are everybody has it around but you're not supposed to use it except in emergincies, so Dark Siders are kinda like the drunk guy at the party with a lampshade on his head, pretending to be an alien spraying everybody with his cyber-foam.

I'll try to have some more inquiries answered for ya tomorrow morning... if not, well, blame my barbeque. I know that thing is gonna act up soon...

Oh, Final Fantasy 7 for Playstation is down to $20. If you missed it, now's a great time to pick up a copy.

And lastly, I've gotten around four emails asking "Are these questions real, or do you make some up?" The very first day, I used questions I've been asked a lot but weren't emailled to me for the column. After that, yeah, they're all the real thing.
