Though most ships of this type are several decades old, the design has persisted because of its flexibility. Well-armed enough to serve as a light escort vessel, fast enough to outrun Imperial patrols or pirate fleets, and roomy enough to serve as a pleasure cruiser, the Blockade Runner (as it is typically called) is used in every walk of life. Popular with the Rebel Alliance and independent traders because of its many advantages, this ship gained its popular appellation as a result of its most frequent use – running contraband and supplies through Imperial blockades.
