To increase speed, the Imperial TIE Fighter had no hyperdrive, no deflector shields, and no life-support systems. This made it among the fastest, most maneuverable starfighters. It was also quick and cheap to build, and the Empire turned out large numbers of these ships to overwhelm its enemies.
