Dark Horse Comics has been putting out some great comic books the past few weeks. Here's the rundown of their latest offerings.
First and foremost, the official adaptation of
Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones. Adapted by Henry Gilroy with stunning art by Jan Duursema and Ray Kryssing, this four-issue miniseries faithfully adapts the new film, plus there are additional scenes that were cut from the final version of the film but are part of the comic!
Each issue of the series has 2 different covers: a painted collage by artist Tsuneo Sanda as well as a photo collage of characters from the movie. You can see examples of the different covers below.
There is also a collected volume that was reported on
earlier, which contains all four issues but for some reason only 2 of the painted covers are reprinted. You can even use these covers for your computer desktop wallpaper in Dark Horse's
AOTC gallery.
Straight out of
Attack of the Clones, the background of the mysterious bounty hunter Jango Fett is revealed in
Star Wars: Jango Fett -- Open Seasons #1 by Haden Blackman, Ramon F. Bachs, and Raul Fernandez. Set 36 in the past, this four-issue miniseries explains just how a young farm boy became a Mandalorian Warrior and then a fearsome bounty hunter. Fans of the Expanded Universe origin of BOBA Fett may also find some interesting names for some of the characters and locations in this series!
Moving over to the ongoing series, we wrap up one storyline and begin another one. First up is
Star Wars #41: The Devaronian Version #2, where Vilmarh Grahrk is STILL trying to set the record straight concerning his recent adventures over the past year. His take on events is pretty much what you'd expect from this dirty rotten scoundrel, but he does get offered a new job at the end. The issue is written by John Ostrander, with art by Davide Fabri and Christina Dalla Vecchia and a great cover by Killian Plunkett (check out Villie's trophy wall!)
Just released this week,
Star Wars #42: Rite of Passage #1 showcases the fan-favorite character (and now a movie star) Aayla Secura! Written by John Ostrander with art by Jan Duursema and Ray Kryssing, this issue features a origin flashback with a young Quinlan Vos as the pair meet for the first time. The second half of the story takes place in the present time, and begins to bring events from
Attack of the Clones into the comic book continuity. Aayla and her new master Tholme travel to Ryloth to protect the Twi'lek heir and run afoul of Vilmarh Grahrk. Now we know what his new job is!
As reported
earlier, Saturday May 4th was
Free Comic Book Day and
Star Wars Tales: A Jedi’s Weapon—FCBD EDITION was a big part of it! Written by Henry Gilroy with art by Manuel Garcia and Jimmy Palmiotti, this issue reveals what happens when someone steals Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber!
And finally, we've gotten word of another free issue that is heading to Toys-R-Us stores this Sunday! Not much is known about
Star Wars: Full of Surprises #1 yet, other than it is a joint Hasbro/Dark Horse/Toys-R-Us publication and it appears to be a planned four-issue miniseries. Stay tuned for more info as we uncover it! Thanks to 'Duke' for providing us with the photo of the cover for this special issue.
