When Kenner was developing 1983's See-Threepio Collector’s Case, there was concern about the case's finish. To determine the best way to go, they produced a small series of Darth Vader Collector Cases with different gold applications and molds and shipped them around the United States to see what held up. Put your ignore the ridiculous Buy It Now glasses on and check out the Darth Vader Dull Gold Figure Case Prototype currently listed on eBay to see what could have been has the vacuum metal finish didn't work out as they hoped. For those considering this piece, it's actually worth $3000-$4000. Hats off to Bill McBride for his insight on this cool case!
