Hammerhead, or "Momaw Nadon" as he is known in modern times, is one of the original cantina aliens in
A New Hope. Glimpsed briefly just before Luke's confrontation with Ponda Baba (Walrus Man), and once again as the first patron to react to Greedo's demise, Hammerhead makes a memorable impression despite all of the other creatures on display.
He is also memorable in action figure form, with the vintage toy's distinctive sideways glance and Kenner-invented blue tunic. An all-new figure was released in the 90's for the
Power of the Force 2 assortment, which was in turn slightly resculpted in 2002 to accompany a section of the cantina bar.
Our spotlight is on the most recent version of this Ithorian drink enthusiast, released in 2006 for the Saga Collection. The sculpting and paint apps really shine on this edition and show how much the quality had progressed in the 10 years between his first and last "modern" releases. His accessories are also very well done, including a staff, a bar glass, and even a bar table to place it on. The articulation is very basic, even for the time. He features swivels at the neck, shoulders, waist, and legs. His arms are pre-posed with bent elbows, which are useful for holding staffs and glasses, but can make it difficult to put him in a neutral pose.
With 12 years having passed since we last saw a new Hammerhead in the stores, let's hope Hasbro doesn't make us wait much longer. Elbows and knees would be welcome. Check out our photo archive entry
